  • What are the firebreak requirements for the Kalamunda council?

We've summarised the council's fire safety requirements to help you make sure your property ticks all the boxes the first time around. These guidelines are current as of September 2023, but rules can change, so it's a good idea to check the council's website for the most up-to-date info. We'd love to work with you to ensure you stay safe and compliant!

    Fire Breaks

Create a 3m wide dirt path all around and as closely as possible to the inside of your property's boundary with a 4m verticle clearance.  Make sure there are no dead ends.

Maintained, reticulated living lawns that are kept completely green are permitted in conjunction with or in place of a fire break

    Dead Material

Keep dead flammable material below 8 tonnes per hectare.

    Grass Control

If you don't have livestock, cut the grass and weeds to under 5cm. Dispose of all clippings.

    Safe Zone

Have a 20-metre cleared area around your buildings. Keep it free from material that burns easily.

Clean your gutters, roofs, and walls of anything flammable.

Within this 20-metre zone, the flammable material should weigh less than 2 tonnes per hectare.

Any tall trees in the zone should be trimmed from the bottom up to 2 metres.

Trees or bushes near buildings should be no taller than 2 metres or cut back to more than 2 metres away.

  • What are the council's deadlines?

Sort all this out by November 1st and keep it that way until March 31st every year.

  • Which locations do you cover?

We cover all areas of the council including: Bickley, Canning Mills, Carmel, Forrestfield, Gooseberry Hill, Hacketts Gully, High Wycombe, Kalamunda, Lesmurdie, Maida Vale, Paulls Valley, Pickering Brook, Piesse Brook, Walliston, Wattle Grove.
